Mango Season

image

This month is mango season in Indonesia. It is between October until December. Mango is delicious fruit: sweet, little sour and fresh. There are several different kind of mango, such as: mana lagi, gedong, arum manis, gadung, golek and kopyor. If you come to Indonesia in this month, you should to try mango. You will not disappointed. Guaranteed.

My father of law has more than three mango trees in Pati (a small town on Central Java). We always happy and never get tired to eat mango. We likes mango ‘arum manis’. ‘Arum manis’ mean fragrant and sweet. It smell is fragrant and strong. And the color of the pulp is yellow or orange. The taste is sweet without any sour even in young fruit. Arum manis mango is big, relatively bigger than other mango.

Gadung mango is smaller and round like a ball than Arum Manis. Gedong mango is not as sweet as Arum manis and little bit sour specially when young. But, we also likes this mango. Sometimes we eat young mango, we  eat with ‘sambel lotis’ or chilli caramel sauce. Most japanese people like ‘lotis’. ‘Lotis’ is combination taste of sour, spicy, and sweet. You should to try also.

Kopyor mango is name given by my father in law. We eat this mango with different way than usual. We hit the mango fruit with hand until crush. Than, we make a small hole on the end/tip. We eat from this hole.

There are a lot of mangos sell in the local market. Mango is very cheap no more US$ 1 until 1.5 per kilo. There are also some mango seller in road verges. But, in supermarket the price is higher.

My Notes on Homecoming 1435H (2014) Part 1

Rute mudik dengan Google MapsPlan routes going home and the back and forth that we’ve been through this in 2014. [/ caption]

Introduction

Indonesian people have a unique culture when Idhul Fitr, namely: ‘MUDIK’ it is mean ‘going home’ or back hometown. People who migrate and work in big cities, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Semarang, will go back to their respective hometown. Initially, this was only done by the Javanese peoples, but then also carried by almost all workers in big cities throughout Indonesia. ‘Homecoming’ is a national celebration of the Indonesian people. All government officers; police, military, road workers, are busy preparing for this big event. Train tickets, plane, and bus are sold out. People are also uses a motor to do homecoming. Tens of thousands motorcycles are cornucopia to the road. It is also thousand of private cars.
Despite all been prepared, there is always a problem with the infrastructure for ‘homecoming’ or ‘mudik’. This year is worse than previous years. In Pantura (road at north site of java island), bridges of Comal sinkhole and could not pass by a big vehicle. This damage causes severe traffic jam in Pantura. Vehicle shifted into the middle traffic lane and the south traffic lane. Worse yet, in Tasik-Ciamis is also a bridge that collapsed. Severe traffic jam occurs in this traffic lane. Addional problem in the traffic lane of Banjar-Purwokerto that there was another landslide. A complete homecoming problems at this year.
The following notes is a note of my journey during homecoming to my hometown; Magelang and Pati at Central Java.

Friday, July 25th

Last day work. My quota of day leave is out, so I must stay logged in until Friday, the last day before leave together. Some of my friends have taken the day off today and the day before they were going home. They avoid traffic jam on the road, because, according to government estimates of peak congestion homecoming is this Friday. I have no choice, there is a traffic jam or not, I must going home, which is important to get home and ‘sungkem’ with Mother in the village.

Municipal Solid Waste in Central Java

Before I leave my country few years ago, I work with waste; organic wastes, crops wastes, and municipal solid waste. When I back again, someone ask me to visit municipal solid waste (MSW) facilities in one of the biggest city in central java. This facility should be process all MSW from the city. But, they have problems in processing, so right now they just process 100 ton MSW per day. The city produce 250-300 ton MSW per day.
What can I do to help them? to improve the process, capacity, and quality
of the product. I’ll try.
